Our Garden - Planning Stages

Claire, Ana and I made a trip tonight to buy supplies for our vegetable garden. We are all very excited to do this - it will definitely be a 'trial and error' type of summer.

We've each helped our parents with gardens in the past, but have never been in charge of our own. The closest I've come is a few pots of herbs that sat on my apartment balcony in Fort Collins.

We bought poultry fencing and bricks to keep out all of those rodents that love chillin' in our yard. We're also going to try marigolds and human hair. Odd combination? Yes.

My dad will be here bright and early Sunday morning to help put up the fencing and turn over the soil. He is such an excellent farmer; I think he is very proud to be teaching me his ways. Plus, it will be fun to share our crops!

Here is a list of what we bought:

Herbs:
Chives, Parsley, Basil, Cilantro

Vegetables:
Yellow Wax Beans, Green Bean, Baby Spinach, Lettuce, Green onion, Tomatoes (a few varieties), Bell Peppers

Flowers:
Lavender, Marigold, Celosia, Zinnia, Coleus
In case you've never heard of coleus, it's this really interesting flower that feels like velvet but looks like a pink brain. See example:

We are starting everything but the tomatoes and peppers from seed. I think if we get them in the garden in the next week or so, we should be fine. We've had a nice (non-traditional Minnesota) spring, which has proven to be beneficial to our starter garden.

We are planting flowers in the front yard and the herbs and vegetables in the back. The front yard space goes around our front steps, while in the back we have a 2' by 15' space as well as a 2' x 30' space.

Stay tuned!
